In the mid-1970s Sherman created A Play of Selves – a visual tale of a young woman overwhelmed by various alter-egos that compete inside of her. The series's 72 photographic assemblages mark one of Sherman's earliest explorations of herself-as-subject in a series of staged photographs. Published in 2007 by Hatje Cantz, this book features a preface by Sherman, all images from the series, and the work's elaborate, handwritten script.
