Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman presents a new series of color photographs portraying women in suggestive psychological states. As in her earlier work, Sherman is both the subject and the photographer of each photograph. Well-known for her black and white "Untitled Film Stills," Sherman exhibited her first color work last year at Metro Pictures. The new photographs are a significant departure in size (larger), format (exaggerated rectangle) and emphasis (from situational constructions to psychological studies). Each of the new works depicts a different woman whose environment and period and style of dress are only vaguely identifiable, leaving the intense emotional quality of the character the greatest source of information and interpretation.

Sherman's work has been seen in Europe in one-person exhibitions and in recent group shows at Musee d'Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou and Chantal Crousel Gallery in Paris; Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn, West Germany; Lisson Gallery in London; Museo Sant'Agostino in Genoa; and S. Weiner International Biennale in Vienna. Her work will be represented in Documenta in 1982. In New York, Sherman's photographs have been exhibited at Metro Pictures, the Kitchen Center, Artists Space, P.S.1, Castelli Graphics and the Max Protech Gallery. Sherman has had a one-person show at the Contemporary Art Museum in Houston and was in Allen Memorial Art Museum's "Young Americans" exhibition in Oberlin. Articles and reviews of Sherman's work have appeared in Reallife Magazine, Arts Magazine, Flash Art, October, The Village Voice, Soho Weekly News, Art in America and Artforum. Her work has been widely reproduced in such publications as Picture Magazine, Gentlemen's Quarterly, and Manhattan Catalogue. A photographic piece by Cindy Sherman will appear in the December issue of Paris Review.
