CINDY SHERMAN'S large-scale color photographs will be on exhibition at METRO PICTURES from 29 October through 26 November 1983.
The fourteen pieces included in this new series are the largest works that Sherman has done, ranging in size from 4 x 5 feet to 4 x 8 feet. Sherman continues to use herself exclusively as the model/subject for the photographs as is, as always, the photographer. The women represented in this series of works, however, are no longer the familiar stereotypes of the earlier pieces, but exaggerated, often bizarre interpretations of slick fashion magazine subjects. The group of pictures was initiated by an Interview magazine advertising series Sherman did for the clothing store Dianne B. Using high-fashion clothing by designers Comme des Garcons, Dorothee Bis, Issey Miyake and Jean-Paul Gaultier, Sherman has responded to the fundamentally eccentric implications of the clothes rather than the possible glamour or chic implied by their unusual context.
An exhibition of Cindy Sherman's work from 1978 to 1982, organized by the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, has been touring museums in Belgium, West Germany, England, Switzerland and Denmark. A book documenting her work from that period was published in conjunction with the exhibition. Sherman's work has been included in major international exhibitions such as Documenta 7, the Venice Biennale, "New Art at the Tate," and "Back to the USA." Recent U.S. exhibitions include "Big Pictures" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, "Directions 1983" at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC, "New Figuration in America" at the Milwaukee Art Museum, "The Anxious Edge" at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Whitney Biennial. Her work has been seen in one-person exhibitions at Metro Pictures, Larry Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles, Chantal Crousel Gallery in Paris, Schellman & Kluser Gallery in Munich, Young/Hoffman Gallery in Chicago and Texas Gallery in Houston. Sherman's photographs are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; George Eastman House, Rochester; Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Tate Gallery, London; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Australian National Gallery; and Boymans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam.
Sherman was the subject of the cover article in the September 1983 issue of Art News, and articles on her work have appeared in Art in America, American Photographer, The New York Times and Kunstforum. Her work has been reproduced and discussed in articles in Artforum, Flash Art and Arts Magazine, as well as general publications such as Life Magazine, Der Spiegel, Vanity Fair, Vogue and Esquire.
